INTERNATIONAL GENEALOGY ASSOCIATION NETWORK
INTERNET RESOURCES CONFERENCE RULES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Revised 25 May 1995
Echo Tag : IGA_INTERNET
Moderator : Jeff Burton (440:129/10)
FidoNet: (1:2275/10)
The Data Center (502)575-0144
1. The purpose of the IGA_Net<tm> Internet Resources Conference is to
provide an international forum for the discussion of genealogical
resources available on the Internet. More specifically,
discussions on mailing lists, FTP sites, GOPHER sites, WWW pages,
and UseNet NewsGroups which contain genealogical, heraldic, and
family historical resources are welcome.
2. Messages in this echo must conform with the current rules in place
for IGA_Net<tm>. Please note that any message which is lawful,
friendly, and related to genealogy is not likely to fall afoul of
any IGA_Net<tm> rule.
3. Personal attacks or "flames", offensive language, racial slurs or
slanderous messages are strictly prohibited.
4. The use of excessive "quoting" is strictly discouraged. Only
quote that portion of a message which is necessary to continue the
"thought" without going overboard. Quoting an entire message is
hardly ever necessary.
5. Message subjects should be as explicit as possible. For example,
GOPHER - UMICH, or HELP WWW are fine but HELP is too general and
someone that could help may miss the message.
6. Leave the moderating to the moderators.
7. General announcements regarding genealogical books, software, or
related products are permitted, providing they are brief,
one-time, and the person making the announcement will not profit
monetarily. Discussion, comparison, and reviews of such products
are encouraged.
8. Since names are the heart and soul of genealogy, aliases are
extremely discouraged. If, due to BBS software limitations, an
alias is used in the message header, the real name MUST be signed
in the body of the message.
9. The use of taglines is strongly dissuaded. In the event the
originator of a message finds he/she has an urgent need to utilize
a tagline, the tagline will only be a short line detailing
research surnames:
Researching: JONES, GREEN, and CALLAWAY
Cutesy taglines add nothing to the value of genealogical research
being conducted by the message originator.... in fact, they
detract greatly from the serious purpose of the message content.
Also, taglines add to the length of messages and therefore add to
the cost of transferring traffic via continental and
intercontinental telephone. Again, you are requested to empathize
with those who are paying the long-distance charges and leave
taglines off your messages.
10. This conference may not be gated to any other network without the
express consent of the IGA_Net(tm) North American Coordinator
(440:1/1).
11. Messages should be in English if possible, but there are no
general language restrictions.
12. Questions or comments about these rules, the echo, or its
management should be sent via netmail to the moderators.
******************************************************************
Considering that characters with the high-ASCII bit set (above 7A
hexadecimal (127 decimal)) and characters of value less than 20
hexadecimal (32 decimal) cause numerous problems with software now
in use, such characters are not allowed in messages in this echo.
