  17. 1.  The purpose of the IGA_Net<tm> Internet Resources Conference is to
  18.     provide an international forum for the discussion of genealogical
  19.     resources available on the Internet.  More specifically,
  20.     discussions on mailing lists, FTP sites, GOPHER sites, WWW pages,
  21.     and UseNet NewsGroups which contain genealogical, heraldic, and
  22.     family historical resources are welcome.

  24. 2.  Messages in this echo must conform with the current rules in place
  25.     for IGA_Net<tm>.  Please note that any message which is lawful,
  26.     friendly, and related to genealogy is not likely to fall afoul of
  27.     any IGA_Net<tm> rule.

  29. 3.  Personal attacks or "flames", offensive language, racial slurs or
  30.     slanderous messages are strictly prohibited.
  31.  
  32. 4.  The use of excessive "quoting" is strictly discouraged.  Only
  33.     quote that portion of a message which is necessary to continue the
  34.     "thought" without going overboard.  Quoting an entire message is
  35.     hardly ever necessary.

  37. 5.  Message subjects should be as explicit as possible.  For example,
  38.     GOPHER - UMICH, or HELP WWW are fine but HELP is too general and
  39.     someone that could help may miss the message.

  41. 6.  Leave the moderating to the moderators.
  42.  
  43. 7.  General announcements regarding genealogical books, software, or
  44.     related products are permitted, providing they are brief,
  45.     one-time, and the person making the announcement will not profit
  46.     monetarily.  Discussion, comparison, and reviews of such products
  47.     are encouraged.

  49. 8.  Since names are the heart and soul of genealogy, aliases are
  50.     extremely discouraged.  If, due to BBS software limitations, an
  51.     alias is used in the message header, the real name MUST be signed
  52.     in the body of the message.

  54. 9.  The use of taglines is strongly dissuaded. In the event the
  55.     originator of a message finds he/she has an urgent need to utilize
  56.     a tagline, the tagline will only be a short line detailing
  57.     research surnames:

  59.                Researching: JONES, GREEN, and CALLAWAY
  60.  
  61.     Cutesy taglines add nothing to the value of genealogical research
  62.     being conducted by the message originator.... in fact, they
  63.     detract greatly from the serious purpose of the message content.

  65.     Also, taglines add to the length of messages and therefore add to
  66.     the cost of transferring traffic via continental and
  67.     intercontinental telephone. Again, you are requested to empathize
  68.     with those who are paying the long-distance charges and leave
  69.     taglines off your messages.

  71. 10. This conference may not be gated to any other network without the
  72.     express consent of the IGA_Net(tm) North American Coordinator
  73.     (440:1/1).

  75. 11. Messages should be in English if possible, but there are no
  76.     general language restrictions.

  78. 12. Questions or comments about these rules, the echo, or its
  79.     management should be sent via netmail to the moderators.

  83.     hexadecimal (127 decimal)) and characters of value less than 20
  84.     hexadecimal (32 decimal) cause numerous problems with software now
  85.     in use, such characters are not allowed in messages in this echo.
